WHY THE SOCKERS?

The San Diego Sockers program builds upon a foundation of values, mission, and programs that focus on a positive culture, development of all players at a competitive level, support and celebration of community, outstanding coaches and connecting players with enriching soccer opportunities. We aim to provide children of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to develop technically, physically, mentally, and socially in a positive, supportive, and safe environment. With the expansion of the San Diego Sockers youth arm of the San Diego Sockers organization, the club continues its goal of growing the soccer community and love of the game in San Diego.

The San Diego Sockers, Cardiff Soccer League, and RSF Attack are excited to announce the expansion of a partnership, in which the Cardiff Sockers youth soccer club will be joined by Rancho Santa Fe Attack and renamed the San Diego Sockers Youth Club. The new partnership looks to create the most robust opportunities for player growth and development in the tradition of a positive soccer environment embraced by both clubs. For many years, leadership at both clubs have collaborated to provide quality coaching and support for players in engaging, positive developmental environments. The joining of the clubs under the banner of the historic San Diego Sockers, creates opportunities to attract high quality coaches and expand the community-based, player-centered, positive culture that characterizes both clubs.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • We take pride in our diverse and experienced coaching staff. Our coaches bring their player experience from professional, collegiate, adult, and youth organizations under a unified philosophy of developing people in a positive, supportive culture. When we say #weloveourcoaches, it reflects our emphasis on recruiting and supporting coaches who reflect our values and care about their players above all.

At the San Diego Sockers, youth players have the opportunity to work with a variety of coaches through formal programs, such as the Specialty Training Program offerings and through informal collaborations, such as cross-team trainings and the general collegiality of our coaches in trainings and games.

  • Our Specialty Training Program (STP) encompasses trainings and opportunities that are available to ALL players in the targeted age groups. The foundational STP sessions are the extra skill development trainings that are offered to age groups at set periods throughout the year by age level as appropriate. Additional STP programs include :

    -Position-specific sessions

-Strength, fitness, and injury prevention sessions done on field or at Olympus Movement Performance.

    -Mindset awareness coaching

    -Freeplay and Finishing Fridays

  • Our organization focuses on providing flexible support for teams and players. We recognize that not all teams and players are the same, but the common thread is that all players can #lovethegame, and we seek to provide environments and experiences that will foster that joy.

    Some examples include include :

-STP sessions allow players to enhance their training to meet their individual needs.

-Our college program provides workshop sessions where players can explore their options for both on and off the field college pathways.

-Team flighting - teams are put into league and tournament brackets after they are formed so that directors and coaches can meet the goal of optimal development for players and teams.

PROGRAM OVERVIEWs

FAQS (FOR GENERAL FAQS, SEE THE COMPETITIVE INFORMATION PAGE)

+ Why are the two clubs joining?

Historically, the Cardiff Sockers and RSF Attack have similar player-centered philosophies and community-based programs, designed to see players for who they are, provide mentoring from coaches who genuinely care, and create opportunities to establish and pursue pathways for their goals. Combining resources for an expanded player pool helps us create more robust, levelled, and sustainable teams and maintain opportunities for all players.

Joining under the San Diego Sockers banner builds on the current partnership and strengthens the connection with an historic organization that has celebrated community soccer for decades.

+ When does the change happen?

Teams will begin under the new San Diego Sockers umbrella as teams are formed for the 2026-27 season. Current teams in each program (Cardiff Sockers and RSF Attack) will continue through the completion of their current season.

+ Does the player have to live in the Cardiff or Rancho Santa Fe areas?

No. We welcome interested players from all communities. Our training fields are local to the Cardiff, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Rancho Santa Fe communities.

+ Where will teams practice?

Current fields from both the Cardiff Sockers and RSF Attack programs will be utilized for trainings.

+ What will tryouts be like? Are players from other clubs welcome?

The tryout schedule will follow the policy implemented by SoCal Soccer, our governing league: TRYOUT SCHEDULE POLICY.

The specific tryout schedule will be posted on our website, along with tryout information and tryout registration link.

For players in the current Cardiff Sockers and RSF Attack programs, new age-group trainings prior to tryouts allow players to meet coaches and other players.

New players are welcome to tryouts and are invited to reach out to coaches, directors, and age group coordinators in advance with questions.

All returning and new players are expected to attend tryouts. Registration for tryouts will go live later in October.

+ What is included in the registration fee?

Club fees include coaching for the year, fall gaming league costs, Specialty Training Program sessions, and administrative costs. The fee also covers general league expenses such as insurance, field upkeep, and registration with both the governing bodies and fall gaming league.

Additional team fees cover the cost of tournaments and additional leagues that vary by team.

Our coaches are all licensed and have at least an “Grassroots” license. In addition, many have played soccer at college, semi-professional, or professional levels. Kraig Chiles and Nate Hetherington, our Executive Directors, supervise competitive teams, with support from our technical director, Mark O'Sullivan.

+ Are current players guaranteed a spot?

It is impossible to predict the outcome of tryouts for every player.  However, the organization is not leading with a specific number of teams for each age group, and our goal is to find appropriate placement for all our returning players. As a player-centered organization, we aim to create teams of developmentally aligned players with a high quality coaching staff. Our hope is that an expanded player pool will support these goals.

+ In what leagues do teams play?

2025-26 teams played in the SoCal and NPL/Discovery Leagues. Seeding occurs early spring. Our Executive Directors work with the coaches to seed the teams appropriately to support development for all teams and players.

+ How will I learn whether my child makes the team and what happens next?

A coach will phone each player who attends tryouts within one week. If your child is offered a slot, you will be emailed club paperwork to complete and you must complete online registration and attend a registration night to order uniform and complete paperwork. For players who do not make the competitive team, we strongly encourage them to join our recreational program, which begins registration in April.

+ Can my child “play up”, or play on a team that is older?

Directors and coaches look at each individual case and makes a decision that is best for the player’s development and safety. Players wishing to play up will also be required to try out for their birth year age group and request to play up. Playing up will be determined based on skills and maturity.

+ What is meant by “Birth Year” or "Grade Year" age group?

Prior to the 2026-27 season team formation, teams were formed based on birth year. Starting with the 2026-27 season, US Soccer has announced an age cutoff change to align more closely with grade year. More information can be found at US Club Soccer.

San Diego Sockers - Youth Testimonials

  • Cadence Mason

“Being a part of the Sockers family has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school years. From the very beginning, I was welcomed and communicated with immediately, which made me feel very included—even though I wasn’t there in person at first. The sense of community, the high standards, and the genuine care shown to each player are unmatched.

Coach Kraig has had a tremendous impact—not just as a coach, but as a mentor and leader. His passion for the game, his ability to bring out the best in every player, and his commitment to developing strong athletes and even stronger individuals have made all the difference. Kraig has been around since I was 7 years old, so his impact has been incredible to not only myself, but to my entire family. Coach Kraig inspires confidence, accountability, and a true love for the sport.

I am incredibly grateful for everything the club has provided—memories, growth, and lifelong friendships—and would highly recommend the Sockers to any player looking to develop both on and off the field.”

Cadence currently plays Division 2 soccer at Hawaii Pacific University.

  • Lucas Beltran

“I started with the Sockers when I was 8 as my first competitive club. The club has had a huge impact on my development as a player and person. The club has given me so many opportunities like being able to train with the SD Sockers and the SD Sockers 2 teams. Although Cardiff was a smaller club at the time, I was able to get the exposure I needed to commit to play division 1 at Davidson College. Working with the club’s Champions League program, and working summer camps are some other ways that the Sockers has made me a better person. I love giving back to the program because of everything it has provided me. I owe a lot of my development to the large number of great coaches at the Sockers especially Coach Kraig, Coach Mark, and Coach Chris, my goalkeeping coach.”

Lucas helped lead the SDA high school team to a record breaking season and currently plays Division 1 soccer at Davidson College.

  • Jackson Miller

“What I liked most about playing at both Cardiff and Rancho Santa Fe was the care and quality that the coaching staff paid to each player. I was able to play under multiple coaches at each club, and both provided supportive, tight knit environments that prioritized player development, and it felt like each coach really strived to elevate each player’s level. One thing I loved was how the coaches had pro and/or collegiate level experience, often being experience in San Diego which provided unique connections and opportunities. On top of that, both clubs promoted an ethos of being a strong team player, teaching me not only how to be an individual player but an effective and supportive teammate. I am thankful for the lessons and developmental experiences that I received at both Attack and Cardiff.”

Jackson is playing his fourth year of club soccer at UC Berkeley.

  • Caden Perry

“To be able to play for both the Cardiff Sockers and Rancho Santa Fe Attack for as many years as I did has given me many memories, lessons, and unique experiences I’ve carried throughout my whole playing career, and life in general. I have been blessed with many outstanding coaches and teammates who I still call close friends and lean on, on and off the field. These teams I have been a part of have taught me the true meaning of hard work and earning things the correct way, with no corners cut. Without a doubt, I would not be the person I am today without both of these programs, as they have provided me ways to enjoy the game I love. My success on the field has been the product of all my teammates, coaches, and the values they have helped instill in me.”

Caden completed four years at the University of Central Lancashire in England while playing academy soccer for Macclesfield FC.

  • Ben Fraser

“From the moment I joined, the Sockers program gave me a true sense of community and a place to share my passion for soccer. I was fortunate to play under several incredible coaches, each helping me grow both on and off the field. Playing a year up and serving as captain taught me the value of leadership, trust, and connection with my teammates. The environment the Sockers created—where coaches inspired us and teammates pushed one another—helped shape not just my game, but who I am today. The friendships and memories I made here still mean so much to me, and they remind me why I fell in love with the sport in the first place. This club will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m grateful to be back home, giving back to the next generation through coaching. Seeing young players find that same sense of belonging and passion that I once did makes it all come full circle.”

Ben completed all four seasons of Division 3 college at Chapman University.

  • Julia Honda

“The Cardiff Mustangs (now Sockers) was the first and only club I played for competitively. Coach Juan invited me to play for his girl's team back in 2010 and helped me develop my skills and overall love for the game! This program will always have a special place in my heart not only because it is where I started my career but because I felt as though it grew with me. My team started at this club when there was only a handful of teams and we were still sponsored by Rimels. I am so proud of this club and so grateful for everyone who has helped us get there. This club and coaches have always been there for me and helped me achieve so many goals including playing 4 years in a competitive D3 program. All the coaches at Cardiff really helped me push myself and get my name out there. Now, there is nothing better than coming home and helping them coach and continue to grow this club!”

Julia played 10+ years at Cardiff and has now completed her master’s degree after playing collegiate soccer at Illinois Tech.
