Coach Nate Hetherington has been a driving force in the Attack soccer program since 2000, most recently as Director of Coaching, bringing with him decades of coaching experience at both the club and high school levels. He simultaneously led the Boys Varsity Soccer team at Cathedral Catholic High School for the past 12 years winning CIF Championships along the way. In 2016, his leadership and impact were recognized with the prestigious CIF Coach of the Year award.

Nate grew up in Encinitas and graduated from UCSD where he played for the Tritons and left with a degree in Psychology, knowing how important it is to apply a positive mindset to life as well as the beautiful game of soccer. He spent eight years as a professional player. He was the first player signed by the San Diego Flash and made history by scoring the club’s inaugural goal against Jorge Campos and UNAM Pumas. During his four seasons with the Flash, he earned multiple honors including MVP, Playmaker of the Year, Fan Favorite, and the Fair Play Award. Nate also played one season with the Atlanta Silverbacks and three seasons with the San Diego Sockers captaining the team along the way.

In addition to his coaching and playing credentials, Nate was a U.S. Soccer talent scout, identifying players for the youth national teams. He holds a National “A” Coaching License, reflecting his commitment to excellence and development in the sport.

Nate's philosophy centers on helping players reach their full potential by fostering a challenging, supportive, and positive environment. He emphasizes mindset while focusing on team building, sportsmanship, confidence, and commitment; values that shape not only skilled athletes, but well-rounded individuals.
