Sergio ‘Keko’ Gontán

Coach Keko brings a wealth of experience from both Spain’s La Liga and the San Diego Sockers (MASL). As the 9v9 Age Group Coordinator, he will support and guide all San Diego Sockers Youth 9v9 teams, sharing the insights gained from his extensive professional career and leadership experience.

A product of the Atlético Madrid academy, Sergio “Keko” began his journey at just nine years old and made history by becoming the youngest player ever to start for Atlético’s first team at 16. He went on to captain Spain’s U17 National Team to victory in the UEFA European Championship before embarking on a professional career that included time with clubs such as Albacete, Eibar, Málaga, Valladolid, and Deportivo La Coruña, as well as a spell in Italy’s Serie B with Calcio Catania.

Keko later brought his talents to the United States, joining Sacramento Republic, where he reached the 2022 U.S. Open Cup Final. Since 2024, he has been a standout player and leader for the San Diego Sockers, competing alongside Kraig Chiles, Ben Ramin, Cesar Cerda, and Chris Toth.

Beyond the field, Coach Keko has served as a Director of Youth Leagues across Northern and Southern California, focusing on program design, league operations, and player development.
